As a university and industrial town, Ilmenau has made a name for itself well beyond the state's borders, despite its modest size. Gotha is the fifth largest city of Thuringia and was residence city from 1640 to 1825. Situated at an altitude of 300 metres, Gotha has a lot to offer in terms of sightseeing, such as Friedenstein castle and its adjacent park. The historic, former capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha can be reached within 45 minutes by car and offers plenty of exciting destinations for a day.

The town Eisenach, also known as “Lutherstadt”, is one of the most beautiful destinations in Thuringia and always worth a visit. With the famous Wartburg Castle perched above the town, it offers you the chance to take a look into the past. The ancient walls bear witness to the story of how Luther threw the inkwell at the devil. About 85 kilometres from Gabelbach, the little town is well suited for a day trip.
